Ref Base – Mentor Evaluations

This was your first center on a full size field. Generally good movement and getting accustomed to the dynamics of the larger field. Areas to work on: you tend to run within the limits of the 35-yard lines. It is very important that as you become accustomed to the larger field that you start covering the entire field, or penalty area to penalty area. The blue team’s style of play was such that it relied on breakaways. During these moments it’s particularly important that the referee is prepared to sprint and follow play into the penalty area.

Good foul recognition and selection within the areas of the field you were covering. This included a correct handball call in 21’ followed by a correct tripping call in the 28’. Areas to work on: there were some fouls, particularly in your deeper corner areas, that were missed due to positioning mentioned above. Following play closely over the entire field length and taking deeper positions will help you see these.

Good interaction with ARs. We discussed how the referee and ARs can indicate throw-in direction with each other before signaling. Working together in this manner avoids the center referee and assistant referee giving contradicting signals.

Good throw-in signals and mechanics. Areas to work on: keep working on the deeper positioning as mentioned above. This should generally place just above, or possibly in, the penalty area when making goal kick and corner kick signals.
