Ref Base – Mentor Evaluations

During the first half you tended to hug the south touchline. During halftime we discussed that even on smaller fields that you should try to get closer to the opposite touchline and avoid staying central or staying strictly on one side. We further discussed how there was challenge on the north side of field and this caused you to be far away from it. I appreciated that you worked on this and showed improvement in the second half. You also tend to stay significantly behind play, particularly on breakaways. As discussed, as play is moving into the penalty area, I would, at a minimum, like to see you moving to inside the buildout line.

You had a good advantage call in the 13' and properly signaled this with your arm. As discussed, work on taking this further and loudly verbalizing, "ADVANTAGE!". This lets the players, coaches, and spectators know that you saw the foul and have decided to let play continue in favor of the aggrieved team.

This was a build-out-line match. No ARs were assigned to this game.

Signaling was generally good. Rember to signal for an indirect free kick after making a call for offside. The arm should be straight up with no bend in the elbow.

Proper uniform helped you build credibility before and during the match.

Diego - As discussed, very nice use of your whistle during this match. Keep working on your lateral movement and following play deeper, particularly on breakaways. You want to be close enough that when a critical call is made or not made that your decision is credible. You also issued a yellow card during this match for a reckless foul. While the decision was technically correct, it did result in the cautioned player leaving the field crying. Often times players in this age group lack the development/maturity to understand the intent of the card. We talked about other tools we can use as the referee at this age group. Examples include taking a knee and going down to the player's level and explaining that you need them to play safe and not risk hurting someone else. This usually addresses the issue with the player and also suffices with coaches and spectators who see you addressing the matter with the player. It also helps keep the game a positive experience for the youngest of players. As a final note, your foul selection was good as further indicated by players and coaches accepting your calls. Diego is good to referee matches at this level. He needs significant work on his positioning. He asked a lot of basic questions before the match started. If he didn't know the answers, I'm glad he asked, but I would expect him to know some of the very basics.
