Camden, it was great to meet you and watch you referee. You had a GREAT first set of matches. You came dressed properly and made a very good first impression as a referee. You looked good like a referee should and you carried yourself very well. I am impressed with your level of competence. You are off to a great start. First, your flag mechanics are very good. Your confidence in signaling goal kick and corner kick restarts was good. And, you had the chance to correctly signal several offside infractions. Nice job. Your focus on the 2nd last defender was good throughout the day. We also discussed the process of keeping score as an AR. You came prepared and one time the referee restarted the match after a goal while you were still writing, putting you out of position. The requirement and/or process for ARs to write should be brought up in the pre-game conference. Good lesson. We also talked about AR positioning on the corner kick so that you can just ball in or out of play. In our final discussion of the day your homework assignment was to concentrate on AR movement from the top of the penalty area to the goal line as you watch soccer on TV. Notice the use of the side-to-side technique compared to movement closer to the half line. Camden, you had a good first outing as an AR. It was a pleasure to meet you and I wish you the best. I observed Camden for three matches, back-to-back. He showed up properly dressed and ready to go. Camden appeared to me to be a little shy, but it could have been first-day jitters. However, he was all business. His flag mechanics are very good. His decision-making on the GK/CK/TI decisions was good. He covered the offside line like he’d been doing it all his life. He is an impressive young man. It is obvious his dad has prepared him well. My biggest concern with Camden is his over-use of the side-to-side movement (my opinion). He did that almost exclusively. Most ARs won’t use the side-to-side movement, even when it is useful. Camden has the opposite problem. Not a problem, per-se, but he uses it when it isn’t necessary. I didn’t make a big deal in my discussion with him because I didn’t want to discourage him, but I did mention it. I’ve never run into this before so I hope to see him again to monitor progress. Camden is ready to go!
