I observed Cienna for only one match. She was on the adjoining field prior to my match with her with another mentor. I noticed she had no badge so I gave her a sticky-back Velcro so she could wear her badge. She has the fundamentals down pretty well. Her uniform was good. She has a fairly good concept of duties regarding throw-in direction and was confident in her decisions and signals. She also has a good understanding of the GK/CK decisions and signals. Throughout the day we discussed alignment of the AR on the corner kick, with the kick on the near side and also from the far side. She did a good job of adjusting to the proper position. Her focus on the offside was fair. In the last segment of her rotation, she did miss one offside call. We discussed this at length post-match. She fully realized that she missed it and now has that “picture” in her mind. I think this was a valuable experience for her and I know she will be mindful about it going forward. Great attitude and fully engaged with all discussions. She should be alright going forward.
Postscript: When Cienna missed an offside call the three coaches for the Alameda Attack 15B team proceeded to gesticulate and complain about her missing the offside call. Two of the three coaches were way over the top with their protestations. I immediately admonished them by saying it was offside and that they don’t need to make such a big deal about it. One of them did not like my getting on them about their behavior and said I shouldn’t be talking to them like that since I was “only just a mentor.” I said that I was talking to them and their behavior was not acceptable. There were no further words exchanged as it was toward the end of the match. The same misbehaving coach made a fuss about an indirect free kick that resulted in a goal in the first half. He made some obnoxious gestures to me and complained about the goal being counted. I just made a face at him. I talked to Reagan at halftime and she confirmed the goalkeeper indeed touched the ball, thus the goal. Coaches…
