Ref Base – Mentor Evaluations

Positioning was overall ok during most of the match. As we discussed, need to move closer to play when entering the penalty area, and going deep into corners on the referee's diagnal.

Regarding the Penalty Kick.. we didn't have a chance to talk about it:

The call was accurate. After you make the PK call, take a deep breath, and take your time getting everything set up properly. The kicking team, I think, took the penalty before you were really ready, but you allowed it to play out, and goal was scored. You ended up on the right side of the ball, and we need to move you over to the left side of the ball, so you don't have your AR to your back. Overall, your decisions were accurate and accepted by the teams and coaches. We discussed demonstrating confidence in your decisions. Using you whistle more effectively will go a long ways towards that. Practice with your whistle so you can use it to communicate.

Using your voice will become a valuable tool for communicating with players and coaches, establishing your expectations... and letting everyone know what your decisions were.

We discussed making quicker signals after making a call... making sure everybody know which direction the restart is going. Quicker, more decisive decisions will help limit confusion and frustration by players/coaches.

This was a very tough game to have for your first assignment ever, and I thought you performed admirably. You clearly have an extensive playing experience, and you have a good feel for the game. I had confidence that you were reading the game appropriatly. As we discussed, trust your instincts, have faith in your abilities. You definitely did that game justice, and you should be proud of yourself. You need more games, more experience, and from there the sky's the limit!

Brekken was extremely nervous for this match (it being his first). I thought he did a good job considering. Marlon (AR1) did a masterful job in helping Brekken through the logistics of the pregame, and then helping Brekken stay calm and focused during the game. He needs more games, and I hope I see back out in the center sooner rather than later. A less competitive game, a slower moving game would probably be best until he gets more confident in his abilities. He's gonna be a good ref if we can keep him interested and excited about it.
