Remember offside is about when the ball is kicked, not when the player receives the ball. Listen for the sound of the ball, then make the decision then and there if an attacking player is in an offside position. Anticipate when there is an upcoming potential offside decision and be ready for it before it happens.

You have the right attitude to be a referee. This is something only you can control and no one can take away from you and having the right mindset will take a long way in the world of refereeing. Remember that the flag should always be facing the field so that the referee can see it at all times. It can feel awkward at first, if you are not used to holding things in both hands, so practice at home and think about which hand you are holding the flag in when you ref. Before too long, it will seem natural and you won't have to concentrate on it anymore. Also remember the flag should be able to be waved; it defeats the purpose to have a flag, if you always keep the actual flay tightly gripped.
