Ref Base – Video Evaluations

Referee close to play... would like to see you get wider, especially when approaching penalty area. Your view of play was fine, but I worry that you were in the path of play as the ball was gettin cleared from the penalty area.

Definitly need to position wider on corner kicks. Several examples of taking position either on top of penaltry arc, or to the right of it. Several times corner kick was cleared and referee was in the way.

Foul selection was appropriate for this game.
Couldn't see it on the video, 2nd half, attacker blocks keeper punt, coach asks for yellow card... I assume you didn't give it. My opinion, right decision, yellow card completely unneccassary in this game. Couldn't tell exactly how you communicated with coach in this moment, but coach accepted the decision.

Signals were crisp and clear. You did have a foul early second half where you stopped the play with a double whistle. Save the double whistle for time when you are just trying to get someone's attention, or you are trying to hold up play that is already stopped (like acknowleding a sub). When stopping play (for example; calling a foul, offside, etc) use a crisp hard single whistle.

This is just food for thought... The incident in the penalty area that resulted in a no-call for handball... The same on I believe you and the coach were discussing after the game. If you decided, in the moment, the ball hit the face of the defender, and not an arm that was raised (as the coach thought), consider the following:
1) Indicate that the ball hit the face instead in addition to the arms crossed motion. That lets them know in real time what you saw.
2) Since it was a head shot, consider stopping the game immediately to check on the player for possible concussion. That answers 2 questions... one, is the player hurt? and second, was it a handball? If you saw the ball hit his head, and you stop play immediately to check on the player, that defuses immediately any questions the coach has about a possible handball.

15:48 (video time), coaches start interacting with each other... same incident as earlier mentioned where coach asked for yellow card. 15:50 (video time), coaches engage with each other again, this time over the number of players on the field. I only wonder how aware you were about the coaches talking to each other? Not easy to detect in the moment for sure, but especially with inexperienced youth referees working as ARs, extra awareness of touchline behavior is needed. Coaches were fine, and there wasn't anything you needed to address, I don't believe... it's just a general question of whether you were aware that those conversations were taking place, and how quickly you were going to be able to intervene if the coaches escalated the situation?

16:05.00 (video time), excellent job indicating no handball the coaches were yelling for. Easily defused the situation, and coach accepted decision and moved on.

After the game, I really appreciate your interaction with the coach who came up to you to ask about a couple of your decisions. Polite, respectful conversation on both sides, you gave a very "matter of fact" explaination of what you saw. Again, coaches accepted your decision.

Easy game for the referee... he's ready for more challenges, and is eager to have more opportunities.

Uniform was good

Overall, I thought you did a good job on this match. Your decision were appropriate for the level and for the style of game. We have some big positioning issues that need to be addressed, ones that could certainly cause issues for you in a higher level game. But again, I thought your performance was good, and your demeaner had a calming influence on the coaches and on the game overall. I would definitely like to see you on some higher level matches.
