Ref Base – Video Evaluations

You need to get a little wider and deeper on the field especially into the corners where there is no AR to help and when play is in the penalty area. You have really nice footwork when you move. Backpedaling and side stepping to get proper angles to see between players. You appear to be looking down at the ball a lot and sometimes miss some upper body contact that happens which may or may not be enough for a foul, but definitely affected the player’s movements and caused them to stumble or change their path of movement. Good opportunity to let players know you are near and see the upper body contact. You can tell them “I am watching” if necessary to prevent any further escalation of the contact and keep it clean. Very good positioning on corner kicks! Make sure to anticipate where the ball will be played on goal kicks and free kicks especially when they are played short and position yourself where the players will be. Many times you waited until the ball had been kicked and then moved and you were caught out of position or got in the way of play.

Good foul recognition and proper mechanics on the restarts. Just remember that you do not need to mark off the 10 yds for a free kick if the opponent has already retreated more than the 10 yds back and it is obvious there will be no interference on the kick. If the kicking player asks for 10 yds and the opponents are back far enough already you can tell them “ the players are back the necessary distance and I will watch for interference”

Great signals overall! You looked confident in your signals and used proper mechanics. Make sure to give the offside signal (arm raised straight above your head) when offside has been called. Also, on corner kick signals, don’t cross over your body to signal. Use your right arm for corner kicks taken on the right side and left arm for corner kicks taken on the left side.

Get in the habit of looking at both ARs at every stoppage if possible so you can see substitutes that are ready to come in and make sure their flag is not raised for any issues. You can have them give you a thumbs up as a way to communicate with them on stoppages to let you know everything is good. Make sure to look at your ARs when players are attacking for offside calls. Every time a new offensive pass occurs you should glance over at your AR. At minute 102:44 of the video your AR raised his flag for offside and you never looked over at him or saw the flag and play was allowed to continue all the way down to the other end of the field.

This referee has tremendous potential and does some very good things that upper level referees do like footwork and confident signaling. Video had no sound so I could not hear her whistle to give feedback on that. Needs more mentoring on positioning, upper body foul recognition and looking at ARs for subs and offside flags.

I know it was very cold that day so you had on black pants so I could not evaluate if you had on black shorts or black socks that were appropriate.

Overall good job! I am super impressed with your footwork and strong confident signals. Keep learning and improving and I am so excited to see your referee journey continue! You have great potential to go far in your referee career!

Ball deep in far corner of field near AR 1. Referee not anywhere in the video frame which tells me you need to be a bit closer to that play. Bad things can happen deep in the corners even with an AR there. Make sure players can feel your presence even if no fouls actually occur at that time and you can see your AR better if they need to communicate something with you like a foul that you might need to show a yellow card for.

We did a zoom meeting on Wednesday 03/19/25 at 8:00pm. We had a great discussion regarding positioning and why there is a need to get wider and deeper into the corners, especially in the areas of the field where you don’t have help from an AR. Emmeline has a wonderful attitude and a great personality to be a referee. She also asked a lot of good questions and even came up with her own answers to some of the questions. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her and I hope to be able to watch her continue her referee career.
