Ref Base – Video Evaluations

Good job of staying out of the way of the players and moving to avoid getting in the way of passes. I would like you to work on getting a little wider towards the outside of the field when play moves that way and deeper into the corners where there is no AR to help you so you can see fouls that may occur there if necessary. I would have liked to see you get closer to the penalty area also if there are a lot of players on a goal scoring opportunity and the possibility of needing to make a penalty kick decision. Being closer will give you more credibility should you need to whistle for a penalty kick or indicate that no foul occurred if there is contact inside the penalty area. You look like you are in good physical shape so try getting a little deeper into the attacking third of the field on your next games. This is something that will make you stand out as a young referee if you can practice doing this in the future.

Good foul recognition on the fouls you whistled for. There were a few other challenges that looked like they possibly could have been fouls, it was hard to tell from the video, but if there is a lot of contact and no foul actually happens, you could try saying something like "nothing there" or "play on" to let players and coaches know that the contact was not a foul or that the play can continue, but you need to make sure you are closer to the players making the contact to be credible if you say no foul has occurred.

Your thrown-in signals, goal kick signals and direct free kick signals were all very good. Make sure when you signal for a corner kick that you turn your body slightly and signal towards the corner flag where the kick will be taken from and place your arm a little bit higher to make it obvious that it is a corner kick. There was some confusion on a play at the beginning of the second half where no one knew if it was a goal kick or corner kick and one set of coaches even thought the ball had gone into the goal for a minute because no clear signal was given from the referee. When you have an offside call, make sure to keep your arm up for the signal until the ball is touched by another player after it is kicked or goes out of play because the restart is an indirect free kick.

I thought you did a good job of signaling with your ARs and looking to them for what signal they would give on their side when the ball went out of play. Get in the habit of looking at both your ARs, but especially AR1 on the team bench side every time the ball goes out of play if you have a chance so you don't miss a substitution opportunity or in case AR1 needs you to help deal with a coach or other issue. It helps to have them give you a thumbs up when you look at them so you know they see you and are paying attention to the game and then give them a thumbs up back in response. We call this a check in and it helps keep everyone engaged in what is going on during the game.

I think this referee has some good potential and I would be interested to see him on a more challenging game or as he progresses in his career. He does need to work on his positioning in certain situations as he pretty much ran up and down the middle of the field the entire game

Please remember to tuck your shirt in because your appearance is very important and gives you a lot of credibility when you make calls if you look professional. If you have a pair of black shoes or soccer cleats it would be a good idea to wear those as well if you can.

Overall good job. Try to work on your positioning, more communication with your ARs, and making your signals a little sharper and cleaner. I think you have a lot of potential as a future referee and I would love to get to see you do more matches some time in the future.

A lot of contact and looked like a possible foul but no obvious indication from the referee (could use your voice and say "nothing there" or "play on") to let everyone know that the contact was not illegal in your opinion.
